Hello!
Let us cut to the chase: this show sucks like crazy...for a slew of reasons that have been discussed to death. Yet, I have recently picked up on something that annoys me as much as the atrocious sexism of the show. I find that this show portrays youths in a particular way. This show is a great find for analyzing this matter. The viewers themselves are perfect suspects. Women ranging from elderly to teen age have voiced their appeal to HL/House's sexiness (when House was admirable and not stupid/not annoying/meaningful) in the fandom/forums. I myself am a junior in highschool pursuing medical illustrating was once an avid-viewer this show.
But one episode that aired this season (the ep where cameron was first told by chase about killing the dibala and the young teen who went to an esoteric concert and was supposedly bulimic) truly bugged me. The young girl and the girls themselves were exceptionally STUPID. Truly moronic and naive in their adoration of this band. Very stereotypically girly/ditzy/oh-my-god-I-love-this-band-I-w ould-totally-kill-for-them ish. It wasn't just this particular patient that irritated me. Many of the characters have voiced their stereotyping of younger/teen patients. Many of the characters will say statements/comments along the lines of "oh..well, that patient/person is stupid b/c she/he is young....oh what a stupid teen....oh kids are brats... teens are stupid...ect. Wilson in the last episode talked to this idiotic, naive girl about NOT viisting her daddy b/c he pursued a younger woman. WHAT? Really? Granted, this was a side note and not truly a fixation in the episode. However, there have been numerous side notes, one-liners, and little comments like this that have irked me greatly.
This show once showed depth and respect to younger characters. There were potw (we have those?) that were young but showed a true grasp of society and awareness about the world. Not know-it-all geniuses. But youths that had true understanding of various matters. We had that one patient who was articulate, dignified in "house v.s god" (s.2) , the young kid who was trying to help his mother suffering from schizophrenia in s.1, and we had the one kid who has the over-protective mother who was intelligent and was more concerned about taking a calculus exam with that bitchy teacher in s.1 .
It wasn't until (shockers of all shockers *eyerolls*) s 4-6 that the show relied on more pre-conceived notions of what teens supposedly are instead of who they genuinely can be for writing younger patients/characters. In fact, I rather miss some of the younger patients that this show once had. But right now, I would not ask for it. The show sucks anyway and they couldn't handle it. I miss the teens from s.1/s.2/s.3 that had some intelligence and sophistication.
There are many viewers that have antagonized house/cameron fans because "oh cam is so young...la la la for wanting house".
The show itself has openly mocked itself in a few eps for casting such a seemingly young person for the underling/supposed to be 30 doctor. Jen voiced it herself in one interview. When the show was concerned about realism.
Yet, again, it could additionally be argued that cuddy is rather young to be in a position of authority (laugh at that for a few minutes) , the dean of a hospital.
I just found it interesting due to the fact that Jen was VERY young when she was cast; if you truly think about it. She was 25. She had enough beauty and sharpness to chill out in the teen market for (at least) several more years(O.C. castmates were in mid to late 20s for the duration of the show's run). Prior to the Ashlee Simpson show and House, jen did a pilot that was set on a beach with surfing. It was canceled by the executives. Yet, I find it interesting because jen never did get a foot hold in that market. Sure, she had Grind in 2003. But the minute she was cast in house, she was marketed towards more adult works: Mr.and Mrs. Smith, Big Stan, ect. It was never as if Jen had anything to prove. Yet, she did very well considering that she was in a cast full of people in their late30s to mid40's with more mature acting works. Jesse Spencer was the only one her age. And many of the castmates have commented on how articulate and intelligent she is. Today, 20 is the new teen on so many terrible levels in society. So many people in their 20s are seldom taken seriously. Many higher-ups will be hesitant to higher 20-year-olds because they presume those people to only care about drinking/partying/being stupid (thank you college stereotype). Jennifer could have easily been caught up in this. Yet, thanks to her street cred of graduating in 3 years, taking hs seriously, being a "nerd", and presenting herself in a dignified manner, she avoided this assumption.
I generally am upset towards the way that society collectively blows off what the teen/young adult generation has to offer. We have more perception and undstanding than both adults and teens themselves give us credit. The majority of petulant behavior is caused by poor modeling. The Who's Baba O' Riley song voices how teens shouldn't waste what they have to offer to society. So much of teen life is wasted on unimportant matters and not enough on things that are of higher value. I can assure you that I am exceedingly indifferent towards dances/boyfriends/parties. I like highschool and I like people, I could easily focus all of my attention on these things if I wished to do so. Yet, I know there is more out there in the real world. There are things that I know jack about. There are bigger and far more important things that lie within the world.
I suppose it is pointless to point this ageism issue out since we as a fandom mostly don't watch the show (until cameron comes back-I wish), yet I found it interesting none the less. Your thoughts?
